AI in the contact centre space is at a crossroads. While industry conferences echo with promises of AI Agents and autonomous journeys, most CX leaders are still navigating legacy platforms, fragmented channels and customer frustrations that haven’t budged in a decade. So, what’s the real opportunity and how do we move beyond the noise?

At Syndeo, we believe the journey toward Agentic AI doesn’t start with moonshots. It starts with reality: brittle IVRs that customers hate, static flows that fail to personalise and AI pilots that never moved past the sandbox. Agentic AI is a powerful concept – but it’s being diluted by vendors rebranding simple automation or workflow engines as “agentic”. To make it real, it needs structure, governance and a practical pathway.

What Agentic AI really means

True Agentic AI is not about giving your voicebot or chatbot a new job title. It’s a shift from reactive to proactive automation, systems that reason, decide and act with autonomy. It blends LLM-powered natural language with contextual awareness, embedded logic and the ability to orchestrate actions across systems. But here’s the catch: the tech isn’t the blocker, implementation is.

That’s why Syndeo advocates for a blended approach and a pathway to full Agentic AI

  1. Deterministic flows for reliability and guardrails
  2. Traditional AI (NLU) for specific scenarios (or dare we say it, DTMF is still suitable/necessary in some use cases)
  3. Generative AI for tasks such as intent capture, intent ‘stacking’, summarisation and FAQ automation

Vendors providing “prompt engineering” UI text boxes (no matter how good the UI looks) are not going to deliver an agentic solution that meets the near-term and importantly longer-term needs of the business. UI text boxes for prompt engineering is where the hype exists today.  Brands need to look beyond the “prompt engineering text box” to see tomorrow.

The IVR problem we still haven’t fixed

IVRs are the elephant in the room. Despite two decades of “innovation”, 76% of UK contact centres say their customers don’t trust IVR self-service (source ContactBable 2025). DTMF remains clunky. ASR is expensive and brittle. And worst of all, the experience is designed around memorising options and navigating trees, not solving problems.

Syndeo helps brands migrate from outdated IVRs to cloud-based, conversational experiences, without rebuilding from scratch. We extract, map and enhance existing logic, giving you a launchpad for intelligent automation without the risk of a rip-and-replace.

Realistic steps to get there

Agentic AI isn’t a destination. It’s a journey with plenty of guardrails.

  1. Start with the right use case – ID&V, FAQs, order status. Get a quick win.
  2. Bring stakeholders in early – CX, IT, compliance, ops. Everyone.
  3. Use a blended AI stack – don’t jump to full autonomy. Mix flows + NLU + GenAI.
  4. Pilot in a controlled environment – minimise risk, maximise learning.
  5. Measure and iterate – CSAT, containment, AHT. Tune and grow.
Beyond the hype

It’s tempting to chase the latest CCaaS demo or LLM launch. But the brands winning in CX are taking a different route. They’re using Syndeo to modernise what matters – voice, web, messaging – and doing it in a way that balances ambition with accountability.

They’re not deploying AI just because they can. They’re doing it where it drives measurable value, reduces friction and prepares their CX stack for an agentic future, on their own terms.

Let’s walk before we run. But make no mistake, we are running.
